Decorating A Room With Limited Space In Style

Even if you have limited space, you can still decorate any room and maximize the space without sacrificing style. When faced with space constraints, comfort and practicality are always important. In a living room, pull the furnishings away from the wall to create a cozy conversation area around the center of the room. Never place heavy furniture at just one side of the room. Instead, place it at opposite ends to create a balanced look.

When arranging a room, convenience is a key consideration. Lamps and tables should be placed close to the sitting area for added comfort. Smaller places should be furnished with lighter furniture to create comfort and ease of movement around the room. In order to maximize the existing floor space, traffic should be directed towards the center of the room. Allow 18" to 24" of space between furniture pieces and 14" to 18" between the center table and the sofa. Never crowd the furniture arrangements. Armless chairs are a good way to define traffic flow and save space as well. By balancing the shapes and sizes of all room furnishings and accessories, you will be able to keep the room to its appropriate scale.

If you are re-decorating your office, consider putting built-in shelves. It will provide enough storage without taking up so much floor space. Applying light paints will soften the lines of the room while visually enlarging the space. It will also reflect the natural light from the window to make the room brighter. If you need extra storage for your office supplies and stationery, try using decorative boxes. It will be both functional and attractive. Try stacking different sizes for added interest and place them beside a chair or on a shelf.

For a small dining area, consider using a drop-leaf table. You can raise the leaves when entertaining a group of people and drop them when dinner is through or if only few people are dining. Use small continuous patterns on the wallpaper as much as possible to add flair to any décor without crowding the room with complicated motifs. A wallpaper border placed at the top of the walls draws the eye upward adding vertical dimension to the room and making it appear taller. Use a monochromatic color scheme. It will help increase the size of the room visually. Avoid ornate style furniture because it will only overcrowd a small space. Finally, sparingly use accessories and background color to add highlights without making the room appear smaller. Accessorizing the room with mirrors will give an added illusion of space while using glass topped tables will provide surface area without blocking the visual openness of a small room.

Colour in Visual Art

Throughout history, humans have associated colour with their experiences, their joys, hopes, pleasures and sadness. And many artists use colour to express themselves more forcefully than the image alone can do. They might express hope by a light yellow against a dark background or lovers' passion by the radiance of the sun. But whilst a visual artist needs to study colour theory and the use of colour as a means of expression, for the viewer, a formal understanding of colour does nothing to enhance the appreciation of an artwork or affect their instinctive reaction to it.

Many articles on colour try to explain the theory of colour as if by understanding colour theory the viewer can better appreciate the art. But a human's reaction to certain colours is a fundamental biological response. We are, of course, also influenced by colour associations from our culture and, very importantly, our own individual preferences. So an understanding of colour theory will not affect our personal response to a particular painting. And whilst the ideas and inspiration behind a particular painting are a very important element in our appreciation of a work of art, the specific colours and how they are used together are also a major part of our emotional response to what we see.

Sometimes the initial emotional response to the colours is so strong that it can make us instantly like, or dislike, a work. This is often the case when the artist has used a colour specifically to express a strong emotion rather than the natural colour of an object in the painting. Or has used an unnatural colour for a familiar object.

It is well known that colour can be used by an artist to create a calming effect, or to draw the viewer's eye to a particular part of the composition. And everyone is familiar with the concept of "warm" and "cool" colours. Warm colours such as red and orange appear closer to the viewer and cool colours such as blue and green appear to recede.

Colour can also be used to create the illusion of movement and excitement in a painting when the artist uses extremes of colour very close together. Our eyes can also perceive a visual rhythm by the use of alternating sequences of colour.

In visual art, colour should create a balanced visual experience. Without balance or harmony, the art is either too bland and doesn't engage or excite the viewer or it is too loud and demanding and the viewer simply turns away.

Below are some of the emotions and effects an artist is trying to represent with various colours through Colour Symbolism. But it is important to remember that all colours can provoke positive and negative reactions depending on their context. And the experience and culture of those viewing them can affect their perception of the artist's message. Colours are capable of so many variations that making absolute statements about meaning is impossible, which is why an understanding of the artist's inspiration and intentions in a painting add to our appreciation and enjoyment of a work of art.

Classic Living Rooms, Part 1

Elegant and comfortable, classic style is a popular choice for a living room, creating a restful ambiance for relaxing, or an impressive setting for entertaining.

A classic living room has an air of effortless style and comfort, as though all the contents have been cherished and handed down over the centuries. Soft, gentle color schemes give an impression of space and light, while period architectural details, such as a marble fireplace or decorative cornicing, add to the look of a well-established home.

Deeply upholstered sofas and armchairs are surrounded by antique-style furnishings - a sparkling glass chandelier, an old brass-handled chest used as a coffee table, and richly draped curtains all reflect an earlier era of gracious living. Small details are important too, such as dainty tassels that finish a tablecloth corner or dangle from a window shade. Complete the effect with formal groupings of pictures, lavish flower arrangements, and precious-looking china, glass, and silver.

Creating the Look

Choose easy, gentle shades for walls, keeping to pale shades if the room isn't large. Creamy yellows, shades of rose, off-white, or beige make good backgrounds for stronger accent colors, and contrast well with rich, polished woods. Plain latex or interesting paint effects are suitable, with detail added in the form of plaster moldings, paneling, or wainscoting. Pick out any details in a delicately contrasting color, or rub them lightly with gilt wax for a faded sheen.

A period fireplace makes an important focal point; an Regency-style plaster surround has a graceful effect, while marble looks imposing - you can imitate this successfully with paint. Carved and polished wood has the right look too. A number of firms specialize in original fireplaces - check out architectural salvage companies before buying an expensive imitation.

Wallpaper designs are traditional - smart stripes, scrolled designs, or stylized flower and leaf prints all flatter the look, but patterns should be fairly subtle. Keep woodwork pale - white gloss looks fresh and crisp - or strip back to the wood, then stain and polish to an aged mahogany or oak effect. Make sure details such as door handles and fingerplates are all in period style - opt for gleaming brass or crystal rather than chrome.

Style Pointers

WALLS

Bedroom Decorating - Creating a Glam Bedroom Theme With Wow Factor

It's simple to create a stunning and glamorous bedroom design theme in one of the seasons hottest color combinations with a little effort and planning.

One of this seasons hottest color schemes for the bedroom is rich eggshell blue and taupe that is accented with cream. With the right balance of these colors in your bedroom, you can achieve visual balance.

To create a focal point in the bedroom, consider an oversized fabric covered headboard in a rich eggshell blue fabric. This will set the color scheme for the room while coordinating accessories help to transition the color scheme throughout the room. Consider a stripe window treatment in shades of eggshell blue, taupe and cream to pull all of the accent colors into one accessory.

Choose a bedding in a lighter shade of the eggshell blue so that it doesn't overwhelm or overpower the design. Also, consider purchasing a bedding that has a delicate print that is complimentary to the rest of the bedroom design theme.

To give your room a polished and modern feel, consider using mirrored furniture throughout the room as accent pieces. This could be done using nightstands, a small dresser, or possibly a bookshelf.

Add character and comfort to your room with the use of a thick confetti rug in a light complimentary color. This will prove to be not only a design element, but functional as well when you get out of bed on those cold winter mornings.

Funky and futuristic room accents pieces such as lamps and wall decor help to pull the overall bedroom theme together.

A beautiful stripe wallpaper would lend the perfect backdrop for this room decor theme. If you choose one that is in a light shade that coordinates with the rest of the room decor, it blends wonderfully while meshing with the bold stripe pattern of the window treatments.

Remember to balance your patterns and textures so that you come across as glamourous instead of gaudy.

Romantic Cottage Decor Sets Hearts A-Flutter

There's hardly a woman alive who hasn't longed for a room decorated in soft, floral, pink and white splendor. That's the very essence of Romantic Cottage style.

Romantic Cottage is often confused with Shabby Chic style but the two have very distinct identities. One of the most distinct differences between the two is their color palettes. Romantic style is floridly floral and almost exclusively pink and white, while Shabby Chic embraces other colors as well. Romantic Cottage decor, however, is a profusion of pink in every shade imaginable, from palest shell pink to the deepest rose (but no hot pink - too modern!).

Comfort and beauty are the hallmarks of this style, which tends to make it a type of decor that limits itself to one or two rooms rather than an entire home. It might work well in a house that's otherwise done in Shabby Chic, with a bedroom or two devoted exclusively to romance.

As one might expect, this decor typically doesn't appeal much to men, who often complain that the bedroom is the one room in the home that's too feminine for them. Those who share their bedrooms with a male partner may have to compromise and create their Romantic Cottage getaway in another room, as a guest room or a home office for milady.

Here are some ideas for creating this decor.

Because the style tends toward the ornate, wrought iron can be an ideal element to bring into the room. Painted white and then distressed, ornate wrought iron can serve in many ways. A bistro set with a small table and two chairs could serve as a vanity table and seats for a bedroom. A section of wrought iron fence or a gate could be transformed into a headboard hung on the wall behind the bed. Silk flowers or ivy garlands wound through its curves adds the perfect romantic touch, like a garden brought inside.

Create decorative accents - as well as useful storage - by covering boxes of all shapes and sizes with floral fabric. Attach satin ribbons, lace trim or pearl beading in white and pink to the boxes for added visual appeal. Vintage chandeliers make lovely light fixtures to create Romantic Cottage decor. If they have dangling crystals, they'll cast rainbows all around the room.

The Romantic Cottage look especially relies on fabric in floral patterns. Whether the fabric has large or small flowers, vines and leaves, gardens or greener, a dominant fabric should be used consistently in pillows, table runners, tablecloths, bed covers, wall art, drapes, valances, and even table linens such as towels, placemats and napkins. Everything about this style of exaggerated, so don't be shy with the florals but finish off the fabric with some solid color pink rugs or solid color rugs in any pastel shades.

White-painted furniture often is "aged" with a crackle finish. There are also lots of comfy cushions and pillows to provide comfort. Wicker furniture also is perfect for this style, especially nightstands, ottomans and other accent pieces.

Finish off the look with candles, fresh or dried flower petals in a china bowl, a mirror with an ornate frame, or shadow boxes painted white to hold sentimental treasures. Romantic Cottage decor is definitely an affair of the heart.

Interior lighting is crucial to the overall transmission and functional comfort of any room. The decisions about lighting in this respect are unlimited because of the wide variety of offered lighting fixtures in comparison to previous years. Lighting bodies at any home are used for both functional and decorative purposes. That is why their design is very important. More powerful lighting should be used in rooms with high ceilings or in rooms where the walls and ceilings are painted in dark colors. Good lighting is required in areas where people are operating and their work requires better lighting and increased visual activity.

Desktop lamps are used for illuminating specific working places. In cases when tables or desks do not have enough space, the lights can be mounted on the wall. Wall lighting is used mainly in stairways, corridors, and service-places for further illumination of specific areas or where the ceiling lighting is inappropriate. For decorative lighting for kitchen cabinets, ceilings of wardrobes or paintings is used mainly primarily aimed halogen lighting in most cases with low-voltage power supply of 12V.

There are some specific requirements and recommendations for the bath lightning. Due to the increased moisture, the lighting in these areas should be moisture-resistant and resistant to any sudden changes of temperature and humidity as well. It is recommended to have additional lighting around the mirror and sink, possibly on both sides of the mirror in order to avoid the shadows on the face.

Except convenience, the outdoor security lighting provides also security and safety. For better energy efficiency and exterior stair lighting can be controlled by timer, digital clock, photocell or motion sensor. For lighting of trees, monuments and fountains, lighting fixtures are placed low and they usually are pointed up to the object.

The modern lighting fixtures are using variety of light sources - from incandescent bulbs to fluorescent and halogen lamps and LEDs. The main indicators of light bodies are the electrical power measured in watts (W) and measuring light intensity in lumens. A 100 watt incandescent bulb produces light with intensity of 1600 lumens. The modernization of home interior LED interior lighting is relatively easy and affordable solution. Modern LED lighting has many advantages over conventional lights. This type of lighting does not require regular maintenance due to the long LED life of approximately 30-40 years. All LEDs are supplied with low voltage for human safety. They are low cost and stable plastic housing in comparison with the glass housing of the normal / ordinary lighting. LEDs are highly efficient light sources, turning 90% of their energy to light, while ordinary light bulbs ratio is only 10% light and 90% heat.

LEDs are semiconductors, light emitting (LED - light-emitting diodes) in the visible or invisible light spectrum. In home decor emitting diodes are now used in the visible spectrum of light. LED lighting is powered by lowering voltage or adapter, or batteries. The LED light can be in different colors depending on the elements and compounds that are used for its producing. There are also LEDs that can emit different colors of light depending on the polarity, size or frequency of the supply voltage. The most commonly used for the interior LEDs emit green, red, green, yellow and blue light.

Design Psychology for Your Office

Using Design Psychology in your office increases both happiness and productivity. Here are some interior design tips on how to make your office a more pleasant and productive place:

Provide Friendly Lighting

Begin your office makeover with lighting, the number one design detail for happiness. Overly-bright overhead lighting can cause problems with eyestrain, headaches, and fatigue. You can install dimmers and add task lighting where needed to correct that situation.

Using home-style lamps lends a friendly atmosphere to an office space and improves productivity. Home-like table lamps provide a feeling of comfort, because our minds are accustomed to that type of lighting. Floor lamps are also another good supplemental light source, and have the added benefit of freeing up work space on desks.

Use iridescent blue colored light bulbs to cool the space in summer. Likewise, amber bulbs warm cold offices during cool weather.

Use Creative Colors on the Walls

Many colors effectively enhance creativity, including soft grays, warm tans, and silver blues. Because gray is the only color without an "after image" left in our brain, soft grays provide great backgrounds for in-depth thinking. Warm tans reinforced with far-horizon desert or beach paintings sustain concentration. Silver blues and cotton-candy pinks inspire fantasy, making these colors perfect for writers.

Overall efficiency can be improved by using sky and navy blues, black accents, and muted greens.

Decorative wall paint like glazing adds a greater sense of dimension to a room. The subtle striations in these finishes make the walls appear to recede.

Dress Your Office to Impress

If you're dressing your office to impress your clients, use over-scaled office furniture, welcoming home-style lighting, and large landscape paintings (to add a sense of visual depth). Combine those elements with tropical foliage to bring nature indoors, which relaxes you and your guests. Bookcases filled with books and closed files signify that you are knowledgeable and organized.

Consider how you want your guests to feel. If you want to look like an expert in your field, display your credentials. Relax guests with something unexpected that portrays your humility like a photo with you in a silly costume. If you have a known degree, don't intimidate your guests with cluttering framed degrees and lots of awards. Be selective with wall hangings, less is better for concentration on the important item in the space -- the people.

Using the techniques of Design Psychology can transform your office into a more productive and enjoyable space for yourself, employees, and clients.

Maximizing Your Home Theater Seats Arrangements

Home theaters allow the cinema experience to reach individual families and movie-goers, all in the comfort of their homes. Traditionally, home theaters have been thought of as expensive and generally, out of the price range of most people. However, proper planning and bargain shopping can make this luxury possible.

While many components go into a theater system, one of the most important is the seating arrangement. Home theater seating can make or break the experience. Uncomfortable home theater seats can wrestle the enjoyment away from the system. Likewise, an awkward layout can detract from the viewing and audio effects of the TV and speakers. To combat this, price-conscious consumers can find affordable discount theater seating. All while planning an effective and comfortable layout.

What makes home theater seats affordable? It is entirely up to the preferences of the user. The most popular tend to be recliner theater seats, leather sofas, or sectionals. Leather make for a comfortable feel while also absorbing sound - which enhances the quality of the sound system. Many furniture manufacturers offer theater seating collections, varying in size, arrangement, material and price.

Consider looking through online postings, weekend sale specials at furniture retailers or even designing your own home theater seating from sofas, recliners, etc. Remember, the key is not just creating comfortable seating, but also focusing on the audio and visual parts of the system.

Below are some tips for maximizing your seating arrangement:

• Place furniture at a comfortable, yet engaging, distance from the TV and speakers.
• Make changes! You may find the perfect arrangement takes two, three or even eight different experiments to maximize the sound and picture
• Try to arrange the seating in a rectangular shape, this will maximize the sound and picture
• Attempt to layout the furniture so light sources are behind the seating arrangement. This will help prevent unwanted glare obstructing the television's view.

The internet can be your best friend when gathering ideas for a seating arrangement. Popular search engines can help you find diverse layout schemes to maximize your furniture seating, TV placement, speaker layout and lighting.

With careful planning and experimentation, a comfortable and functional theater seating arrangement can provide years of enjoyable in-home cinema viewing. Be creative, experiment with different patterns and enjoy creating an at-home cinema!

Extreme Outdoor Sportswear

Probably no one needs prompting to buy outdoor gear when one is planning mountain climbing or other extreme game; be it sunglasses or shirts or even pants. The instant satisfaction which accompanies the perfect suitability and the pride of buying the best comes only when you buy after some home work. Perhaps this is why there is a flurry of counterfeits and lookalikes of big brands being sold as genuine!

Big brands are built on constant technical innovations and market researches. If there is anything that makes brands like Oakley shirts or sunglasses unique, it is certainly not the wide array of design choices but the genuine technological innovations. Take sunglasses for example; the glasses have dual performance ratings: the light index and the visual light transmission, VLT. The light index number from '0' to '4' indicates the increasing darkness of glasses. VLT tells us the percentage of light that passes through the glasses and onto your eyes.

How do these numbers help a buyer? Well, depending on your usage, Light Index 3 glasses suit bright, sunny outdoor wearing, likewise, number 1, the clear glasses, goes well with indoors and cloudy days. Half the job is done once you are through with the index selection. Choosing further, through VLT, is on the same lines as light index. The harder part is really selecting the shade of your liking; see for yourself- Oakley Gold, Black & Ice Iridium lenses are trail blazing wherever you wear it with breath taking frame designs. It's not for nothing that countless eyewear makers tend to use Oakley lenses not to mention the unique polarized pieces which are the rage.

The nowhere, never before Oakley has a full range of pants and shirts in clothes' section are made from veritable water resistant, breathable polyester fabric tested at 20,000 g/sqm for vapor transfer for wearer's comfort. On the styling front, you have the irresistible topstitched pattern, hidden pocket openings etc are a few to tell you apart from a whole range of shades. The absence of side seams provides all the freedom for outdoor use. Ski and cargo pockets complete the comfort and style just like you wanted.

Transition Lenses - Photochromic Lenses - The New Generation Lenses!

The basic idea behind the Photo chromic lenses is that they should provide protection against the harmful UV rays of the sun and also from the changing effect of the sunlight which can be harmful for our delicate eyes.

These lenses can produce a tint effect depending upon the amount of UV rays falling on them. The tint effect is more on a bright sunny day as the UV rays present are more and less on a dull day as the UV rays present is much less. They do more than ordinary clear lenses as they adjust automatically to changing light thus controlling the light falling on eyes and hence allow the wearer to see comfortably in any intensity of light. They will act as clear lenses when you are inside or when it is night but when you are in sun light they will turn as dark as sunglasses.

There are various names given to these Photo chromic lenses such as Transitions, Reactolite, Reactions and Graduations. But in totality these lenses are known as photo chromic lenses. The photo chromic lenses from Transition are the most advanced lenses and in most cases the Transitions lens is the preferred option due to their over all comfort and performance.
Transition lenses are available in various forms such as in Standard Plastic, Poly Carbonate etc. These lenses are made from very advanced technology and are the very fast to react to the UV rays of the sun. They take not more than 30 seconds to react and it is within this short span of time that they even get clear. Reactolite is another brand name of glass photo chromic lenses. But these lenses take a longer time than the transition lenses to react and are much heavier.

Why transition lenses?

They help protect eyes like sun block protects skin by blocking 100% of the sun's harmful UVA and UVB rays which can cause cataracts and macular degeneration.

They automatically adjust to block glare, improve contrast and help reduce eyestrain and fatigue.

They are Convenient and fashionable too: Available in brown and grey tints and work with virtually all prescriptions, lens design and materials.

They are ideal in the sense that they can save you having to purchase two pairs of glasses that is, a pair of Clear glasses and a pair of Sunglasses.

They take not more than 30 seconds to react and it is within this short span of time that they even get clear.

Who can benefit by wearing transition lenses?

For anyone who has ever experienced eye strain and fatigue or found themselves squinting in outdoor light, transition lenses are an ideal option. Transition lenses help to make it easier for virtually anyone to see better and more comfortably in any light while enjoying protection for long-term eye health - all automatically and all with the convenience of one lens. Ideal candidates for these lenses are:

- The elderly - frequent move from indoors to outdoors-as you work and pursue recreational activities-led to compromise of vision, eye strain and fatigue or the worries of eyesight being damaged by UV exposure. Transition lenses is the most convenient way to optimize vision performance and increase visual comfort while also ensuring automatic, everyday protection from harmful UV rays for anyone who wears prescription eyeglasses by reducing glare and blocking 100% of UVA and UVB rays,

- Children - children have greater need for such lenses than adults do as their young eyes are more sensitive to bright sunlight. Because kids spend more time outdoors and also their eyes are not fully developed, the average child receives three times the annual UV exposure as an adult does. Transitions lenses are as clear as regular clear lenses, making it easy for kids to function in class or do their homework. Outdoors, these lenses automatically adjust their tint to minimize glare, making it easier for kids to see better while significantly reducing the discomfort of squinting, eye strain and eye fatigue.

Children also require a safe, shatter-resistant lens material. Transitions lenses are available in sturdy, lightweight, shatter-and impact-resistant materials in the industry's widest selection of lens designs and brand names.

- Individuals with certain medical conditions
- Individuals who have developed cataracts or other eye conditions
- Individuals who have undergone recent eye surgery
- Individuals taking certain medication that has ocular side effects.
- Individuals with high sensitivity to light, and more susceptibility to invisible UV rays and visible glare.

Cool Colour for Bedroom

Whatever decorating scheme you chose, the greatest endeavour should be made to ensure that the bedroom will always be the place of sanctuary imbued with individual personality and comfort. Happily the bedroom is potentially one of the most decoratively flexible, creative, and individual areas in the home because it is contrived solely for personal, rather than public, gratification. Within the bedroom environment, the cool look creates an atmosphere of harmony, reflection and peace.

The aspect of the room is one of the first considerations when decoding on what ingredients will best empathize with the spirit of the style. If the room has large windows and faces toward the sunshine, then this is the principal factor on which to base all other ingredients. Exploit the fact that the room is blessed with lots of natural light by using ethereal or subtly patterned fabrics. Be generous in the quantities to engender a sense of luxury, but keep the curtain design unfussy and rhythmical: there is a vital balanced to find when using cool colour, maintaining an open, cool look while not mistakenly creating a sense of bleakness. The bed's solid bulk is the visual core of the room, and as such should be fully included within the overall scheme, rather that treated as a separate entity, as so often happens. Include at least one deeply upholstered chair of chaise longue, if there is room, and provide plenty of storage space to exclude mass.

Take full advantage of the combinations of hard and soft surfaces for the cool bedroom, bedroom contains a lot of soft furnishings, while the bed frame, wardrobes, and other storage items provide ample hard surfaces. It can be the pivot for a blue and silver, or white and aquamarine scheme, leaving the hard areas of floor and walls as the clean lined backdrop in white or palest blue.

While hard flooring certainly contributes to the cool atmosphere of a room, painted floorboards, for example it is a good idea to combine this with rugs and curtains to soften the sound. Woodwork could be painted to pick up on the focus of colour around the bed. If the fabrics focus is to be held on the bed area, an easily created four poster effect can be made by attaching light material curtains onto tape and fixing the four corners to hooks screwed into the ceiling. The cool theme, especially in the bedroom, must never be a clinical or cold one, so you will need to make consessions here and there. Either use subtle variations in colour so that the look is not too empty.

Naturally white walls accentuate cool space, but in the bedroom it is best to include areas of colour soft blues that retain the cool feel, especially around the bed to define that focus, perhaps by painting the bed head wall.

After Effects CS5 - More About Layers

After Effects CS5 provides many tools to develop and manage your element layers. As your comfort level with these tools rises, so will your development curve.

After Effects is a funny beast. There are so many things you can do and so many settings, controls, and options. Its tempting to skip way ahead to get to the 'fun stuff' and indeed, you should. Getting the 'instant gratification' of seeing someone teleport into existence, light shimmering off the waters in your animation, importing 3D creations from Cinema4D are all within your reach. However, I find myself again and again going back to the basics to get a better understanding of how it all really works.

There are great tutorials and 'downloadable' projects that give you a glimpse of possibility and I can't imagine going through the discipline without a few tastes along the way of what 'can be'. This has been the dance for me. Rub shoulders with the gurus, take their tutorials, download their projects, then pick them apart to understand how it was constructed enhancing your learning curve each time. There are many great books that actually take you through the classroom. A favorite, with high reader ratings, is Chris Meyer's 'Creating Motion Graphics with After Effects'.

When you look at the timeline and its controls in After Effects, you see a lot of icons, a lot of options, and you can choose to display some or part of them in your chosen design mode. You can also rearrange them so for me to say, 'on the far left', is based on what I consider an 'out of the box' workspace. In fact, if you look under the 'Window' pull down menu on the top far right you will see several workspace options from 'animation', 'effects', 'standard', and you can save your own workspace design.

In the standard workspace layout you see several options for each single element in your timeline panel. We won't cover them all in this article but start with the basics and the options that let you choose which to display. This can be a little confusing in the beginning when you are following an example and you don't see the same options that are being presented. In the lower left section of your timeline you see three icons that will change your display.

On the far left is 'expand or collapse the layer switches pane' and it looks a bit like the size/expand image we're used to seeing on most of our windows 'sizing' options. When you click this off and on your layer switches come in and out of view and these switches are options like whether to make a layer 3D, or turn an effect applied to this layer off or on. On the far right is the option to display your duration panes represented with a bracket '{}' symbol. Displaying your duration shows when your object enters and exits the composition, how long it is and its 'stretch' factor. You can 'stretch' an entry and this can be as simple as 'squeezing' a moon rising into a few minutes, or 'stretching' a hummingbird flight into an entire minute.

All of the icons and thumbnail controls in After Effects display their title with a 'mouse hover'. This same title will locate their documentation in the help provided on the far right pull down menu. There are a lot of bells and whistles that may seem a bit overwhelming at first, but provide a rich assortment of options and controls that make your job much easier.

Toric Contact Lenses - A Great Cure For Astigmatism

Toric contact lenses arose out of a need that could not be addressed by regular contact lenses. For many years after they were introduced, contact lenses could easily fix nearsightedness and farsightedness but could do nothing for astigmatism. Through careful crafting of contact lenses, it became possible to change where light rays focused on the retina and return the eye to 20/20 vision. Astigmatism is different and posed a special problem that was not solvable by the technology of the that time, forcing people with astigmatism to continue wearing glasses. Toric lenses ultimately solved that problem.

Vision issues usually happen because the eye focuses light rays incorrectly in relation to the retina. Nearsightedness causes light rays to focus in front of the retina. Farsightedness causes light rays to focus behind it.

Astigmatism is a different problem altogether. Astigmatism means that the cornea, lens or the eyeball as a whole is oddly shaped compared to a normal eye. The physical distortion is small and undetectable by others, but small differences in the eye produce a large effect for your vision. Light rays end up scattering in many different directions--not just ahead of, behind, or on the retina. Blurred vision is the unfortunate result of this distortion.

The scattering of light that occurs in astigmatism is what makes it more difficult to produce contact lenses to fix the problem. Toric lenses solve this problem by combining different shapes in order to focus light properly. Regular lenses are shaped like half a sphere, but toric lenses combine a spherical surface with a donut shaped (toroidal) one. This unique shape solves the light scattering problem.

Despite their different shape, toric lenses are made of all the same materials as other contact lenses. They can be soft, hard, or rigid gas permeable (RGP). Unlike other contact lenses, they can't be allowed to rotate around the eye--the toric lens shape must remain firmly in place to prevent the scattering of light. That could mean, for example, that they are weighed towards the bottom so as to keep that side of the lens on the bottom part of the eye.

Toric lenses can also be designed to fix more than one vision problem simultaneously, such as astigmatism and farsightedness. This flexibility and unique shape make them more difficult to manufacture correctly, and eye exams and fitting can be more complicated.

As a result of their special qualities, toric lenses are sometimes more expensive. People with a mild astigmatism might avoid the extra expense by just using ordinary contact lenses. The cornea will to some extent conform to the shape of the lens and minimize the scattering of light. In fact, toric lenses may not be necessary at all for mild astigmatism. Only your eye doctor can say for certain after administering an exam.

For people end up needing toric lenses, there are many options available. You can purchase single or multifocal lenses. Toric lenses are also available in the same types as regular lenses--disposable, single day wear, weekly wear, monthly wear, and even extended wear.

If you suffer from astigmatism, toric contact lenses offer you a flexible and convenient alternative to your glasses.

Using Low Voltage Lights Throughout the Home

In recent years the rapid advancement in lighting technology has provided both home and business owners, with a wide selection of low voltage lighting solutions. As a result of these advancements, there are now lights to accommodate for virtually any kind of need.

However these choices can also be overwhelming, which is why it is first important to consider how you intend for your lights to be used, and what purpose they will serve, before you rush out and purchase any lighting equipment. Here are some of the factors you should take into consideration.

General Lighting

General lighting is a term used to describe light that covers a wide area, and is not concentrated on a particular spot. A light bulb hanging from the ceiling is a good example of general lighting, as is light coming in through a window.

General lighting is the most important form of lighting, as without it you wouldn't be able to see where you are going. It should therefore be your primary concern when choosing lighting equipment.

The cheapest and most efficient form of general lighting comes from fluorescent bulbs. These can come in two different forms. The first are the large fluorescent tubes, and the second more commonly used design, are the compact fluorescent bulbs.

Both of these can provide a highly energy efficient form of general lighting, although they may detract from the design of a room somewhat due to their obtrusive size.

An alternative option is to use halogen tungsten bulbs. These can be neatly concealed in ceiling arrays, providing an excellent form of general lighting.

Task Lighting

Task lighting describes any lighting that concentrates on a particular area. For example, a desk or reading light would be a form of task lighting. They provide lighting for activities that require more light than that which can be provided by general lighting.

Currently the most common type of low energy bulb used in task lighting are the tungsten halogen lights, which are commonly found in desk lights. However LED lights are now also starting to be used for task lighting, providing even greater energy efficiency.

Specific Lighting

One of the most exciting things about low energy bulbs is that for the first time they have provided home owners with an economical form of specific lighting. Whereby indoor features such as cabinet displays, or outdoor garden features, can be illuminated with light thereby enhancing their design.

Previously this form of lighting was only seen in the commercial sector, such as in store displays. But now with the recent advancements in lighting technology, home owners can also create stunning visual designs of their very own.

The most common method of using specific lighting is with halogen tungsten bulbs, as these bulbs can provide concentrated directional light, or if the need arises, a slightly dispersed beam.

Generally, fluorescent bulbs are not used for specific lighting, as their lack of directional beam makes them more suited for general lighting. LED bulbs also tend not to be used for specific lighting, as they tend not to be as bright as the halogen tungsten bulbs.

However this is sure to change in the future as LED bulb technology improves, and when it does, there is no doubt LED lights will become the favored form of providing specific lighting.

Asperger's - The Itchy Tag Effect

Ever been bugged by an especially itchy wool sweater? Or been horrified at the shrill sound of fingernails being dragged down a chalkboard?

Just imagine if your day was filled with such experiences, and you and your loved ones were at a loss as to how to understand or help.

Most of us familiar with the basic symptoms associated with Asperger Disorder understand that people with Asperger's often seem hypersensitive. Children with Asperger's today often readily voice their discomfort with textures, noises and scents they find uncomfortable, and this discomfort has become, if not an accepted diagnostic criteria, a very familiar phenomenon for parents.

In their April, 2009 article Talent in Autism, Simon Baron-Cohen et al describe sensory hypersensitivity, a form of enhanced perceptual functioning typical of many individuals with autism spectrum conditions (ASC). Indeed, the article states that "studies using questionnaires such as the sensory profile have revealed sensory abnormalities in over 90per cent of children with ASC." How individuals process information (both cognitive and sensory) may be highly impacted, even organized according to, these differences: and the differences may cause distress, but also predispose to unusual talent.

Sensory: oversensitivities often reported by adults with Asperger's include:

Tactile: oversensitivity can cause the individual to feel physical sensations such as light touch, itchy fabrics, hugs and bare feet as unbearable.

Visual: oversensitivity can cause the individual to find fluorescent lights, bright sunlight, flashing lights and overly stimulating visual environments (e.g. casinos) to cause great discomfort.

Auditory: oversensitivity can cause the individual to find auditory input to be impossible to ignore. Foreground and background noises can compete with one another, leaving the listener unable to selectively attend. Shrill or high pitched noises, such as those of dental drills, children's squeals or shrieks, and blenders can cause extreme discomfort. Discordant music can cause discomfort.

Gustation: oversensitivity can cause the individual to feel uncomfortable with new tastes, or to find them intolerable. Children with gustational oversensitivity can prefer the same foods over and over again, refusing new foods and finding new flavors distressing.

Olfaction: Current research does not support evidence of oversensitivity for the sense of smell.
Clinicians who work with adults with Asperger's often find that this sensory hyperacuity has been coped with and channeled in creative ways.

Following are some of the coping mechanisms reported to me by clients who have struggled with sensory oversensitivity without knowing exactly what the problem was.

Clients who struggle with tactile hypersensitivity often:

o Wear soft, heavily washed, loose-fitting clothing, such as t-shirts and baggy shorts
o Avoid body piercings and tattoos
o Find showering unpleasant due to oversensitivity to sensations of water and changes in temperature
o Remove tags from clothing, which can be itchy
o Choose specific brands of clothing, underwear and shoes which provide minimal restriction
o Find ways to gain tactile input which is soothing, such as hair-pulling, hair twirling, hand tapping, etc.
o Enjoy stroking soft materials, such as the fur of cats

Clients who struggle with visual hypersensitivity often:

o Avoid visually overwhelming environments
o Wear sunglasses or hats to minimize bright lights
o Remove lamps or bulbs in work areas to reduce glare
o Cover fluorescent lights
o Close blinds during work time to prevent interruption by visual stimuli such as passers-by
o Keep work areas neatly organized to prevent becoming visually overstimulated
o Find visually predictable environments, such as video games, rewarding and comfortable

Clients with auditory oversensitivity often:

o "Tune out" when conversation becomes too overwhelming to attend to
o Avoid interacting in crowded settings, such as parties, or use substances to mediate oversensitivity
o Rely on electronics, such as iPods, to provide predictable auditory stimulation
o Wear noise-cancelling headphones when concentrating or meditating
o Spend quiet, solitary time to "recover" from overstimulating experiences
o Avoid telephone and cell phone use to minimize unanticipated auditory input
o Hum, sing or make noises to cancel out noises beyond individual's control
o Listen to music excessively

If you have noticed your own or a loved one's sensory hypersensitivity, be sure and treat it as condition to take seriously. Some researchers (see Belmonte et al., 2004) hypothesize that this sensory "magnification" may result from neural overconnectivity in sensory parts of the cerebral cortex. While research on brain structure and development differences is still being conducted, sensory oversensitivity in adults with ASC is well documented, and is most likely physiologically based.

Implementing some simple interventions can help the individual with Asperger's feel much more comfortable in the world. An increase in sensory comfort can have drastic effects on cognition, avoidance behaviors and the ability to attend to other stimuli. Many of my clients report irregular sleep/wake cycles, with much "down time" spent recovering from situations which cause sensory overload. Taking care of yourself ahead of time when facing a sensory challenging setting can prevent "sensory hangover", and is part of taking care of yourself.

Stay tuned for more on how sensory oversensitivity may be a contributing factor to talent and giftedness so often seen in adults with Asperger's.

Lights No Camera Adds Action and Style to a Water Garden

You can spend hours and hours carefully planning and creating a beautiful water garden, but if you overlook the importance of lighting, you will only be able to view the garden during daylight hours. Adding flowers and fish are important, but so is adding lighting. The mix of light and water is mesmerizing. Reflections and colors dance around, creating an ever changing mix of visual stimulation. Proper lighting will not just show your water garden in low light or night, but it will truly show it off.

When you are choosing which lighting design to use, you have plenty of options. One very unique option is the "Dancing Water" mister. For this system, you attach a misting unit to an underwater pump, which shoots water up and out. Colored lights are included with this system, providing a colorful display of dancing water.

Not all misters are the same. The shape of the nozzle will dictate the pattern that the water will move. No matter which one you choose, you will have the added benefit of circulating water, which will help to reduce maintenance. You can purchase the misters without lights, but it would be a shame not to get the lights as well.

Another great lighting option for your pond or water garden are floating lights. They consist of round balls connected to a waterproof cable. You can adjust their buoyancy by adding water to them. You can buy them individually or in sets.

A simple, easy, and affordable lighting system is to add EggLites. You can use them in the water or out of the water. Predictably, they are lights shaped like eggs. They have interchangeable color lenses to add variety. They are essentially a form of compact spotlight that can be placed basically anywhere you need them.

If you are trying to get your lights to blend into the natural surroundings, rock lights work great. They can be use in your garden, or along a walkway or path. They look like rocks and you cannot see the actual light source. It looks as if it is the rock itself emitting the light.

You can also use underwater lights, which are typically made of plastic, stainless steel, or copper. Colored lenses can be added for effect. The lights can either be secured to a base and placed at the bottom of a pond or mounted onto the side of a pool or hot tub.

There are already plenty of affordable options like malibu landscape lights for lighting, and new innovations and ideas will add to the possibilities in the future. Adding lighting to your water garden is very important. Choose the best option for the style of garden that you wish to create.

How Bubble Walls Work

A bubble wall is a water feature that is completely enclosed. This means the water cannot be touched from outside. An enclosed features makes bubble walls easy to maintain and an excellent choice for public areas where you do not want people passing to touch the water or make a mess. Lets look at how these unique items function and what effect they produce.

Bubbling water features can be made of acrylic or glass. Acrylic is usually preferred because it resists breakage much better then glass would. The inside of the bubble panel is hollow, this is the area that is filled with water which enables the air bubbles to travel through it.

Usually the central panel is channeled, the channeling enables the bubble streams to rise in individual streams which makes the visual display calmer because the flow is less erratic. You can also make the panels with an open design with will produce a swirling motion to the bubbles.

Bubble walls need to be framed to enable it to stand on the floor and to cover the top section which will enclose the lights and prevent dust from falling in the water from above. The best frame materials are either acrylic, stainless steel or copper.

There is an air pump that needs to pump air into the water panel section which is what creates the bubbles. There is a small tube that the air is pumped into and the tube has a series of small holes in it. As the air is pumped into the tube and the air pressure is generated the air will exit through the small holes in the tube and bubble out. Air is lighter then water so the air will rise through the water in the form of millions of tiny bubbles which produces the main visual effect of the bubble wall.

Choosing Your Garden Furniture

Once you have finished laying your patio, your deck or your lawn, you will unquestionably start thinking about how you can enjoy more time outside. Therefore, you will have to have some garden furniture. Many shops stock garden furniture. You can try home improvement centres, large department stores and garden centres. There are also businesses on line that will deliver. The difficult part is choosing your garden furniture.

There is a very wide choice of styles of garden furniture - a style to suit every person and match every garden. So, before hurrying down to the garden centre, it is worth considering for a while what you would like to accomplish with your open-air seating area. Do you want a theme? Do you want to entertain or dine there? Or do you just want to sit quietly, take pleasure in your garden and read a magazine?

Indeed, the answer may well be a combination of all those things. If you just want to sit there with a drink and a book, you may be content to just buy a couple of chairs and a small table, but if you want to entertain or take family meals outside, you may prefer a more substantial table. A large oak table would be quite costly, but it would look magnificent and last for a ten years or more.

If you decide on a table, you will need chairs to match, but do you want loungers as well? They could be of plastic and stored in the shed until wanted.

You will likely need some type of shade. This can be given by folding, even removable umbrellas or by overhanging trees or shrubs. Wisteria or clematis can do the task too and cost you almost nothing.

Do you anticipate cooking in this space? If you do, what and how? Do you fancy a barbecue pit or a real hob and oven? A lot of people in regions where the climate allows are doing a great deal of cooking outside in a replica of an indoor kitchen, but without all the walls.. If you plan the outdoor kitchen well, you will be able to use it in the rain too. I find it great not to have kitchen smells in the house and cooking outside is a good experience as well.

If it gets chilly in the evenings then you can think about buying some patio heaters. They are not dear to buy or to run and one standard patio heater can keep quite a crowd of people warm. (By the word 'standard' here, I mean standing, like a lamp post).

Lighting is the last large point on the list when choosing garden furniture. There are actually two sorts of garden lighting to consider: lighting to see by and lighting to lure insects away. Again, you could use standard lamps to light up your patio. They shine their light far enough so that you can still look at your garden after dark or you could have individual wall light on dimmers.

The one light I would categorically have is a mosquito lantern. Hang this away from where you sit, because they do draw insects to them which they then electrocute with a pleasing zap.
